Sessions 1-5

From Cowboy Bebop: Space Cowboy

Session 1: Asteroid Blues

  • Origin of Name: A reference to The Blues, a popular genre of music present constantly in the show, and the asteroid belt which is the location of this episode.

This was the first official episode of Cowboy Bebop, and introduced the first two main characters, Spike Spiegel and Jet Black. In this episode Spike and Jet are pursuing a runaway syndicate member who has absconded with several vials of a powerful drug known as Bloodyeye.

Session 2: Stray Dog Strut

  • Origin of Name: A song, Stray Cat Strut, written and performed by the Stray Cats

This was originally the first aired episode of Cowboy Bebop, and introduced a new "main character," the Data Dog, Ein. Spike and Jet are hot on the trail of a bounty worth a surprising 8 million wulongs, which ends up netting them Ein, and a whole load of trouble.

Session 3: Honkey Tonk Women

  • Origin of Name: Another song, this one Honky Tonk Women, written and performed by the Rolling Stones

This session introduces the lovely, and deep in debt Faye Valentine, who is the main antagonist in this session. Jet and Spike get caught up in a scandal involving an encrypted chip, and try to make some quick cash until things go awry.

Session 4: Gate Way Shuffle

  • Origin of Name: A reference to a type of casual dance known as the Shuffle, defined by short, shuffling steps. The Gate Way refers to the episode's focus on Gates and Phase Space.

This is the first session to make use of and better explain Phase Space. Beyond that it involves a bounty hunted by Jet and Spike who dies at the last minute. Fortunatley for our intrepid bounty hunters, a much larger bounty appears and the majority of the session involves their capture and release of the bounty, while picking up Faye Valentine, much to their dismay.

Session 5: Ballad of Fallen Angels

  • Origin of Name: This is a reference to a type of writing or song known as a ballad, characterized by its sentimental or romantic nature.

This session is the first to introduce Vicious Spike's friend-turned-rival. After seeing a bounty on a valued one's head, Spike heads out to find him. Later, he uncovers the truth: his mentor is dead at his former friend's hand. Spike sets out to kill Vicious, and the session ends in a lethal battle that is a foreshadowing of things to come.
